Quote Quote "Lying is an accursed vice. It is only our words which bind us together and make us human. If we realized the horror and weight of lying, we would see that it is more worthy of the stake than other crimes.... Once let the tongue acquire the habit of lying and it is astonishing how impossible it is to make it give it up." -Montaigne
Laproscopy Heppened to see a laproscopy in the operation theatre yesterday. Interesting and delicate stuff-atleast much better than opening up the whole abdomen and tearing everything apart. All you do is make three tiny holes in the abdominal wall and put in a camera through one and a pincer or anything through the others and do your work. You can get a diagramatic idea if you click here
Mars For once it was our chance to see mars from close but alas it seems that we may not be able to do this. Why because the weather wouldn't let us. They say Mars was this close 60,000 years ago, when the Neanderthals lived! and wouldn't be this close again till 2287. So it seems that one might have to tesort to pictorial version of the planet as the live version of the event is not very likely. But i will still pray that the sky clears up by tomorrow. Who knows winds might pick up and take all the clouds to some place where they obstruct no one's view.
Its fun blogging and bunking at the same time. I am supposed to be in a call right now but as is evident i am caring to blog. Thats how most of the labour room calls are like, males don't get to do anything and for once its the other sex taking the burden. The resident seems to be more than happy at letting us have a break. She has got lots of high risk patients to mange and obviously she doesn't want my inexperinced hands anywhere near the patient. But then i think if these hands don't get the experience how would they learn to work. But for the moment who cares, i had a long day and i need some time to reasses my sorroundings don't i.
Labour-the pain! At last my labour room rotation will be coming to an end this friday. I have lready started feeling quite relieved, though its still two more days to go. I don't understand the point of putting guys in the labour room where they have least opportunity to learn anything new in practical terms because of our social setup. Since my collegues fail to understand the attitude of patients which leads to male refusal almost all the times i can only empathize with those guys who are coming to the labour room in the coming weeks. Being kicked out of the clinics by the ladies for the sin that i am a male is annoying enough. Uselessness, i used to think, is a good thing, atleast you are doing nothing, but it has turned out that uselessness to the point of breaking is disturbingly bad experience. Anyhow i am through yet another of med school experinces. Alhamdolillah.
Independence Day II "India is constipated with a lot of humbug. TAke religion. For the hindu, it means little besides caste and cow-protection. For the Muslim, circumcision and kosher meat. For the sikh, long hair and hatred of the muslim. For the christian, Hinduism with a sola topee. For the parsi, fire-worship and feeding vultures. Ethics, which should be the kernel of religious code, has been carefully removed. Take philosophy, about which there is so much hoo ha. It is just muddleheadedness masquerading as mysticism. And yoga, particularly Yoga, that excellent earner of dolars! Stand on your head. Sit cross-legged and tickle your navel with your nose. Have erfect control over the senses. Make women cry "Enough!" and you can say "Next, please" without opening your eyes. And all the mumbo jumbo of reincarnation. Man into ox into ape into beetle into eight million four hundred kinds of animate things. Proof? we do not go into such padestria...
Imam Ahmad was heard saying while on his death bed, Not yet! When he was asked what he meant, he said, Iblis (Satan) came to me and told me, Ahmad! You have saved yourself from me! I told him, Not yet! In other words, so long as a person is still breathing, he can never be complacent about the snares of the Devil! Man is not perfect by ature but it is the will and help of Divine power that gives him the opportunity to perform more than he can. Kind of strange isn't it. I didn't get this fatwa on Islamonline . If we are born impure then how can we act pure no matter what?
It will be azadi time in about 40 minutes from now. Pakistan will be 56 then. Khashwant singh is one of India's most widely-read writers and journalists. He made his debut with his very first novel, Train to Pakistan . The novel is set at the time of partition when flocks of refugees were crossing the line drawn by those who were least affected by its drawing. Muslims rushing to their dream land and Hindus moving to live on theirs. During this process many lives were lost as tempers ruled over sense. Khashwant talks about a village on the railway line bridging the two countries. A social worker is there to spread his vision about newly achieved miracle of knowledge. asks the villagers "Why don't you people want to be free? Do you want to remain slaves all your lives?" After a long silence the lambardar answered; "Freedom must be a good thing. But what will we get out of it? Educated people like you, Babu Sahib, will get the jobs the English had. Wi...
I am amazed at the fact that while learning to heal in a medical school i have actually turned out to be a better technician or an engineer as i would like to call myself. From fixing unresponsive computers to setting up air conditioning units everything seems to be much more interesting than poking your hands in the bodies of people who can respond-at times quite violently. Lately i have to my credit one air conditioning unit that though being fresh from the market wouldn't work. The problem was obvious, there was not enough ventilation space behind the unit. So i figured out that i should employ my time tested method( that i used to back home), shut down the water over flow in the back and let the water act as a collant. Humm what a genius i have turned out to be. It worked and is still working, better than many in the hostel.
Abortion is a very delicate issue that has been much talked about in every circle of the society. I could not make up my mind when i sat in a discussion in our class dedicated to the topic. But one thing is certain for me it should be mother's progrative to decide wether or not she wants to have her pregnancy terminated before time. here is another view as it appears in reply to a query on islamonline
Palestinian boy saves Lives of Four Israelis. I always knew that medicine is peace and helps promote it. This news article proves to my point. But this will be further strengthened if same effort is shown by the israeli side.
While i was journeying back to karachi i took upon myself to read ' Blasphemy ', a novel by Tehmina Durrani. Tehmina has to her credit books like 'My feudal Lord' . This book that i read was infact a true story of a women who suffered at the merciless hands of her peer husband. I happened to read the introdution at my uncle's place and from the very first words it looked like a must read. The book is a picture of the social setup in the rural settings of Pakistan, atleast in Punjab and Sindh. It speaks of the ways the influential take advantage of the dprived masses. It makes one weep at the illetracy and ignorance of the society towards the social evils that continue to plague it. Islam in subcontinent is said to be the fruit of the saints who helped spread the enlightenment to the general public. But the way their descendents have cashed on their efforts is not very pleasing. In most parts of the country Islam is taken to be property of certain group of p...
