We have this issue being debated, with keen interest on class mail of beliefs and rituals. The problem in question was brushing teeth while fasting. Some are of the view that it is permissible on the basis that brushing teeth is imperative as we have lots of public contact in the day when we deal with patients and we must not be smelling like rotten rats from our mouths. Also these people believe that actions are judged by the intentions behind them. Since the intention behind brushing is not to nourish hungry bellies thus it is permissible.
Now there is another group of self acclaimed philosophers who have struck back on the above notion with full force. They site fat'tawa in support of their notion claiming that tooth paste contains sweet taste and thus is not permissible while one is fasting. They have a point of view that one must not come up with reasons when adhering to islamic injunctions and follow them in full without any exception whatsoever.
There is another group of people who seem quite uninterested and weary of all this discussion going on and are passing on request after request to stop it as this fills most of their mail box. I may have certain reservations about both point of views but this third group of people are mere pretenders who have, to this point, not developed intellect, sufficient enough, to understand issues and take part in conversations, in a healthy way.
All I think about this whole idea of brushing is simple and can be conveyed in this verse by Iqbal
The ultimate tragedy with this ummah is that we have driven ourselves into quarrels over trivial matters of little significance. Instead of recognizing and trying to workout solutions for the real challenges faced by the ummah we try and outwit our selves on these petty non-issues. But I have fare enough confidence that once the young generation realizes this tragedy it will rise to the occasion. Once again we will have among us scholars, philosophers, scientists, musicians, mystics and men of art as great as Ghazali, Kindi, Razi, Ibn Sina. And this day is not far away!
