Women of the new Century.
They comprise almost 50% of our population. They are an important part of our social and cultural values. They are the protected ones. They are the respected ones. They are an important part of decision making process in the common households. They earn livelihood for their families. They are absolutely diehard when it comes to taking care of their families. They are the women of Pakistan. Yet they want to do more. they want to climb the Everest, if not that then atleast Karakoram 2. They want to walk tight ropes. They want to direct videos. They want to do everything that a man does. They want to over burden themselves. And to do exactly all this they have been given a shot in the new reality TV show on Pakistan Television Network. The experimental show being aired over our national network is called 'Sunsilk Woman of the 21st century'.
Just a little while ago I had a chance of watching this programme since i had nothing better to do. I have no words to exclaim my disgust at what I saw. If a woman can be used as a showpiece for all the frustrated eyes out there, scanning this space we have done a commendable job. Well I have similar views for almost all the programmes being aired over our channels these days. We have been doing a marvelous job at making woman a model made for sex.
In this perticular programme the anchors and the judges were all so sleepy that its not even funny. One of the judge was even seen yawning while talking to one of the contestants. The female anchor of the programme uttered not even a single word during most of the programme. She instead changed her pose from time to time in order to keep her presence felt on the screen.
This programme was about finding out direction capabilities of the contestants who had all made short duration video flicks for a given segment of a song. As the judge pointed out almost all the flicks were very similar and there was very little ingenuity in the videos. The end of the programme was most interesting though. It is this part that prompted this post. After all these efforts on the part of the contestants it all boils down to kicking out two out of six contestants from the game. Now the producers and directors were so clever that they figured out an absolute gem. It is not low scores or bad work that decides whether you stay or not but the votes of your fellow contestants. Just as you see in the AXN programme "Survivor". I simply cant help praising the brains at work here. What is the point of the whole show or the game if in the end it all has to come down to personal enimosity or grugdes between the contestants. I mean the women who wins the programme in the end will not be the one who scores the most but one who survives all the instant deaths at the hands of her fellow contestants. There could be nothing more dumb than this. Then again before the voting began the anchor warned the contestants that they should fill out their voting slips and not leave them blank. To see that this is done they have hidden cameras and finger printing experts on the scene. Apparently some girl dropped an empty slip into the sudden death box so that she doesn't have to kick someone out. And even in the same programme one of the girl shyed away from the voting process as she thought she couldn't back bite her fellow contestants. The anchor who was completely untrained in handling this situation came down hard on the poor soul and made her vote. The closing remarks of the programme were even more shocking. The anchor exclaimed in disgust that since these girls have formed very strong bonds amongst themselves so they will weep over loosing their friends for some time and till then we take leave from our viewers and hope to see you next week. I mean what the hell!
I have no problem with reality shows. I have absolutely no problem with women taking part in any part of life social or otherwise. If you ask me I would rather advocate for this cause. We need as many working hands and as many thinking minds as we can get in our country. But I have serious problems with giving up our cultural values and clinging to something that is not ours from the very beginning. I know globalization is taking its toll. If you ask me it had always been but the thing is that why do we have to take up all the wrong things from others. Why do we have to degrade women by making them sex symbols over our media.

Learning Arduino 1

This holiday season I decided to gift myself some basic electrical components in the form of a Arduino UNO set from Elegoo. I have always had a desire to tinker with electronics and in gifting myself this basic set I am now starting on a journey to quench my inner electrical workman's thirst. I hope to develop this hobby as I move forward and will, from time to time, post about it here on the blog. As the journey moves forward I am sure to run into trouble and issues. But as they say you can not master anything without first being a fool at it, so I have decided to remain a fool at it until I am a little good at it. To start with, I do possess some elementary knowledge in electronics and electronic circuits. I intend to further my knowledge using the world wide web and following some very useful video channels on youtube. I will first start with some very basic projects to familiarize myself with Arduino and basic electronic circuits and techniques such as soldering. Then graduall...

Elections 08 V

In the election results of the year 33 former ministers who were closely associated with Musharraf have lost their seats. PML-Q has suffered losses to the seats of those who were stalwarts of the previous administration and were thought to be close to Musharraf himself. the results express more so a disgust and hatred with Musharraf and anything even closely related to him. Otherwise PML-Q has been able to win seats of those members who were not closely associated with Musharraf. So we can safely conclude that this is a an anti Musharraf vote and not a pro PPP or PML-N or ANP vote. In other news the Govt. is now thinking of letting go of the Chief Justice of Pakistan who has been kept under illegal house arrest since November 3, 2007. Aitizaz Ahsan was freed not until the last minutes before election and now Chief Justice's imminent freedom spell something very fishy. What was so important about him that he was not released before elections? What special situation has arise...

Pakistan Earthquake

It was terrifying to say the least. We have often heard the proverb being used again and again but this one was a real earth mover. It occurred at about 52 minutes past 8 in the morning while most of our urban population was still asleep in their homes. The jolts kept on coming for about a minute and 10 seconds and then there were lighter jolts in the evening. I was fulfilling my new found glory in the field of gardening when our tractor started shaking like mad. It was literally heaving its huge heavy body sideways like some shaky pendulum.    Then my father called in and told me that the quake had been hard on Rawalpindi and Islamabad. I talked to my relatives there to ensure that they were safe and away from harm's way. Afterwards I switched on the Television. Thus starts my cynicism for the whole event!    The anchor on the TV was so disturbed that he could not even tell the story right. At one point in time he is telling us all the reports fro...
