Cowasjee is one of those columnists who interest me not only for their writing style but also for their boldness in thrashing all that is not right in the city of Karachi and sometimes outside. This time around Cowasjee has addressed an issue that is closer to my profession than many. Apparently a letter was written to the President of the GMC, London. The six page documented brought or tried to bring the attention of the recipient authority to the credibility of qualifications of junior doctors who come from Pakistan. Many serious issues has been raised by the anonymous author regarding fake documentations and clinical experiences. The writer also bashed the PMDC and CPSP. The recipient circulated the letter to all the concerned authorities within England and Ireland. Cowasjee's article about the letter can be read here. I was pointed to this article through Zak's blog.
If anything this letter has served to create tremendous troubles for those young doctors who are trying to make their way into post graduation studies in England. It is already tough to get into those places owing to general apprehension of the west towards Pakistani nation as one comprising of either terrorists or those who aid them.
I think any institution be it British or American makes ample efforts to assess the credibility of any doctor before allowing him/her to work in their institutions. So crooks and quacks are filtered to quite some extent in the admission processes to these places. There is no point in harping your tune in front of those who are not part of this story. Also this hideous work done by any individual points to the fact that there is a lot wrong with the Medicine in Pakistan. And that such irresponsible people will not think twice before taking these troubles out.
There is a need of setting our house in order for two reasons. First this will enable more graduates and young doctors to gain access to post graduation studies abroad. Secondly and more importantly it will serve to improve the standards of Practice in this poor country. Quackery is a menace in this country.
