Lot of water has flown from under the bridges in this country. This can be said with some authority in both metaphorical and literal terms. The Red Mosque has turned into a charred remain of black, the CJ has been restored, the minister has been sent on remand, the rains have fallen like sins spewing forth from the annals of this nation eventually flooding the rivers.
The incident of the red mosque was both tragic and unwanted. Innocent blood seems to be cheap in the market and our soldiers are proud to make victory signs after having proudly subduing their own. But one thing should be kept in mind. The American soldier, when he returns from Iraq or Afghanistan, has effectively become a psychopath who needs long hours of psychiatric help to bring him back to his/her senses and get war ready again. But American soldiers should feel lucky that they have a good system in place for handling the emotional consequences of the war on terror. My worry is my soldier. It is easy to say to kill a man but very difficult to push the trigger. It becomes especially difficult when your conscience is working against pushing the trigger. When the enemy you see is your own brother not only in religion but in blood and society. The consequences of such skirmishes as Red Mosque are far reaching on the psychology of the soldier. It is my fear that the backlash in terms of suicide bombings will come not only from the supporters of the fanatic mullahs of Red Mosque within civil society but also from the soldiers who took part in the operation. Such consequences will be very very bad.
The other dilemma is that of a Govt. officer who wants to not do evil but is being hurled to do more and more of it because one idiot at the top thinks that all evil is good. Our civil servants are becoming a confused lot every passing day. They are human beings just like us and don't want to carry out military orders on their civilian populace, but, they have no other choice but to beat the dictator's line with him.
Condi called Mush the other day and told him in categorical terms that if he declared emergency in the country sighting foreign threats as one of the reasons this will further harm America's efforts to save its dwindling image in the region. Mush as ever took the pressure right at the pressure points and postponed his idea of imposing emergency.
The CJ restored is thousand time more poisonous to Mush than he was without all this drama that went with him. But the whole point is to suspect all authority. This is the same chief justice who took oath from the same Mush and then was very thankful to him for bestowing this honour on him. Then what gave this CJ the power and wit to think that he could resist Mush's onslaught? You think CJ could tell from the changing political balance in the country. I think he had active support form outside, that, not only assured him of backing but also pre warned him on the Mush intention of sacking him. I seriously doubt if anyone can sit in Presidential camp office of a dictator for five hours and resist his demands and threats just on his own.
BB is trying to forge a deal with the dictator. I think she is being a practical and cunning politician in that if she is able to strike a deal she might save this country from chaos and destruction. PML and MMA should help her in making her way forward rather than trying to vent their anger on her for ditching them in the process.
