Jabra Chowk

Musharraf seems to have lost it completely. His recent outburst at a journalist, in UK, did not serve him any better. With every passing day he seems to be more and more arrogant in his approach towards his countrymen. His words reek of disgust towards the very people he is supposed to lead. These are, but clear indications that he now fully realizes that he has lost all support in the Pakistani public. All that he wants to do now is usurp and plunder as many resources as he can before he becomes a victim of his own atrocities. I wonder why do we forget that all the money that we collect so diligently in our life is not going to go anywhere once we have breathed our last. Afterlife or no afterlife nothing that we have in this world, either physical or emotional, is going to matter once we are dead. What is then, all this struggle for? Maybe i wouldn't say the same if i had all that power and money in my hand! But maybe! Our dictator is a rich man, he owns (or at least he t...

Sarfroshi

Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai. Dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qaatil mein hai Karta nahin kyun doosra kuch baat cheet, Dekhta hun main jise voh chup teri mehfil mein hai Aye shaheed-e-mulk-o-millat main tere oopar nisaar, Ab teri himmat ka charcha ghair ki mehfil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai. Waqt aanay dey bata denge tujhe aye aasman, Hum abhi se kya batayen kya hamare dil mein hai Khainch kar layee hai sab ko qatl hone ki ummeed, Aashiqon ka aaj jumghat koocha-e-qaatil mein hai Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamaare dil mein hai. Hai liye hathiyaar dushman taak mein baitha udhar, Aur hum taiyyaar hain seena liye apna idhar.

Sliding Ivy

Ivy league universities are considered the crown jewel of US educational system, worldwide. But the cost of educating children in in these universities has always been very high. Not anymore, says Harvard ; Yale and the rest follow suit . Now through Harvard's new revived financial assistance policies students belonging to the lower and middle income groups will have to pay around 10% of their family income on studying at Harvard. Yale has similar arrangements for its aspiring students. I have little idea if this is valid for international students as well. But then again there is no point in asking this question because i hardly know any international student who is not on financial assistance. Temperature and time

The temperatures here, in twin cities, have been chillingly below zero for most part of the weekend. It is, therefore, little wonder that even the seasoned residents of the area have given up to cold and restricted their activities. I can't really tell the difference since this is only my second weekend here; but so it seems that things have unexpectedly cooled down here. The same can't be said for back in country where it is that unfortunate tie of the year when even the chill in the air can't put restraint on the way we think and act. Muharram is slipping past, thus far comparatively peacefully, amid raised fears of suicide bombings and extremist backlash. There is a foiled attempt to mix cyanide in the water in Karachi and there are 12 Pakistanis that have been caught in Spain possibly connected to a terror plot. We, the Pakistanis, are now becoming used to spending our lives day by day, with each day that passes on without a calamity or two seen as a blessing that...

$10,000 water habit

I think she is aptly named Material Girl not more so for her song but her habits. The gossip goes that she spends $10,000 every month on her water alone . She picked up the outrageously expensive habit of drinking specially blessed Kabbalah water, which costs about $5 per bottle. It might not be a big news for the affluent society of Hollywood but for me personally it is a big waste of money. I think she has every right to drink all kinds of blessed waters if she can afford but again the spending is outrageous. When we keep in mind that clean drinking water is available to only 20% of Karachi's population. In most African countries people have to travel miles to get a drop of water to quench their thirst. Livelihood of people living in North Africa depends upon the seasonal rains that fall in the desert once in a while. But on a lighter note the calculation does not seem to make sense if the tag is for her drinking water only. By this measure she consumes 2000 bottles of wat...

Tony Dungy after Colts' Loss

Following the Colts' playoff loss to the chargers , many Indianapolis players and coaches are fearing the worst -- that coach Tony Dungy will step down and head off into retirement. It is a sad day for the Colts as they lost to chargers in a game that they lead till the first half. Dungy kept on coaching after he lost his son to a suicide. His team won the Super Bowl last February . He is famous for transforming the teams he coaches into winning combinations with a style and dignity. He teaches professionalism and efficiency. When he was with Tempa Bay , Dungy turned a one-time expansion team into an annual playoff contender. In Indianapolis he turned a team into a confident but disciplined bunch. He is loved by the team members and the assistant coaches and inspires a spirit to perform into them. Powered by ScribeFire .

National Champions: LSU Tigers

LSU has won the national championship in a game against OSU last night. The game was played at the same stadium that gave refuge to the people affected by hurricane Katrina. Since I reside in the winning team's state I could not be left un-affected. So much so that my 7 year old nephew was fighting with me to get him home early from his tuition so that he could watch the game. The first question he asks me, when we are home, "Moiz mamu which team is LSU?" But still there was so much gossip going around in his class about the game that he got interested even if didn't want to. such is the love for the game in this country. OSU started the game on an offensive note in the first quarter, but this was not to last for long as LSU soon recovered never to loose their lead in the remaining 3 quarters. The biggest problem with OSU's game was their offense. It seemed to work only for the first 5 minutes of the game and afterwards was completely blocked by the LSU...

Punjabi Fun

Those of us who have been to the old style sermons in the mosques will be able to appreciate the beauty of this video that i found on Youtube . I was especially amazed by the perfection the way the commentator raises and lowers his voice.

Power crisis

It might not be a new thing for us Pakistanis but it certainly is getting worse by the day. this winter has been extremely bad in terms of load shedding and power outages that plague my nation. Power shortage cripples everything from daily life activities of reading, washing to industrial processes of all sorts. Our country is suffering from a huge power deficit this winter. It is estimated at a daily shortage of around 3000 Mega watts of electricity. What is happening in Pakistan is not new for the world either but in milder terms. The energy pundits are forecasting a worldwide shortage of fossil fuels and energy to run the world. The demand for energy is rising everyday with world population increase and increasing using of gadgets in accomplishing event the simplest of tasks. But as ever we Pakistanis are looking for our lame leaders to come to our rescue. If we were any wise we should have known that this is never going to happen. It is therefore that the nation starts th...
