Pkistani govt. has banned newsweek's latest edition in Pakistan. It contained some controversial articles about Quran. The link to the article
One of my friends commented that it would have been better if this issue had been allowed to reach Pakistan so that we could come up with a suitable answer to the allegations made there in. I agree to his point in full and wrote to him thus
"Assalam-o-alikum,
.....The main weak point that I found in the article is that the professors name has been kept for the fear that he might be harmed whereas at the same time it is said that all his new revelations about Quran will be published in form of a book soon. Another point is that the professor has some serious stuff he is talking about and that is
"The original Quran, Luxenberg contends, was in fact a Christian liturgical document".
Yar and then I think the whole point of all this article is made very clear in the following sentences
"In the West, questioning the literal veracity of the Bible was a crucial step in breaking the churchs grip on powerand in developing a modern, secular society. That experience, as much as the questioning itself, is no doubt what concerns conservative Muslims as they struggle over the meaning and influence of Islam in the 21st century."
You see its no more than a part of a vicious effort of non Muslims to separate the Muslim society from Muslim theocracy.
You were right when you said that we must make active efforts to answer the questions raised by the study of this professor instead of hiding our heads in the sand. But my friend if you ask me govt has done the right thing by banning the issue at least for the time being. Because I feel that as major part of our society remains uneducated to the extent that they seek violence as a tool to express their emotions such an article would have roused angry emotions and nothing else. There would have been no constructive talk on the issue.
What I would say is that govt.'s act was incomplete. In addition to banning the issue what further could have been done is that a committee of Islamic scholars should have been formed which should have viewed the issue much more deeply and come up with convincing arguments against the current theory of the professor.
I hope that you agree to my point......"
