It is so damn tedious that I have to dedicate one whole post to this section in my Kaplan Physiology book. It has been almost a week now, since I set to read it and be done with it. Initially my speed was deterred by frequent episodes of TGD then it moved on to lapses in concentration due to household chores. Now it is just psychological barrier that is standing like a giant in my way. I mean if you look at it the section is nothing but a hundred or so pages of respiratory physiology, that, I happen to know pretty well, otherwise. Perhaps the best in my whole physiology course. Just 100 pages!
I have to do as much as possible in as little a time as possible. But while I am at it I have to do it in the very best way possible. Afterall USMLE is no child's play and the hefty fees that are involved in taking this exam make it much more a one time affair for doctors like myself.
Almost all my friends are going to take this exam in near future. We are all hoping to do good in it and then take our residencies in United States of America. But since 9/11 getting visas has become much more difficult and involves a lot of time on the applicant's part. And add to it the humiliation that we are made to undergo while applying for a visa. But most of the doctors, almost all those who apply, bear this extreme humiliation with a smiling face. This is because of one understandable reason. USA is a dreamland. they know if they get there they will do good because their IQ is much higher than the native American. They also know that if they stay back in their home country they will not be able to live a life of ease and prosperity for there are a million more like them roaming the streets looking for jobs. they know that they do not have the money to fight the corrupt mafia in an under developed and corrupt country like Pakistan. They know they will not be able to support their families if they work here. they know they will die just as their forefathers did struggling to survive. thus they take on whatever degrading and insulting remarks are thrown at them by the staff. They have to smile because they know even if they are not the wanted terrorists they will be treated like one. All they want to do is secure a prosperous future and do good in this world but they are, most of the times made to pay a high moral value for this.
Not everyone is is equally unhelpful at the embassy. There are good counsellors as well who are kind and helpful. Who talk sense and are considerate of our needs.
I hope to be a good hard working doctor. Like everyone i want to get some experience in America and then come back to serve my country. Let us see what future has in store for me.
